Happy New Year! Bonne Année!!!! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you have all had a wonderful break. I have enjoyed some time with family and friends and am looking forward to seeing all my wonderful students again.

All classes have CRES speeches due on Monday or Tuesday. Students can email me at nissaquill@gmail.com if they need information about this assignment.

On Monday and Tuesday in class I will be providing review materials and assignments to help students prepare for our mid-term exam on Jan 13/14. We will be reviewing for the next two weeks and will start new chapters after the break for MLK weekend.

If students are interested, they are invited to make and bring in a King's Cake. Both French and Spanish cultures celebrate this Ephiphany tradition with slightly different recipes.

If they bring in a King's Cake or make a Powerpoint or poster about these celebrations, they can earn extra credit on their homework grade.

Here are some links to help them out:

Spanish and French CRES Speaking Tests

Both Spanish I and French I classes will be doing a speech or Oral CRES test before Christmas break.

This is a VERY important assessment. Students are already in the beginning stages of preparation for the speech.

They will receive a checklist for the speech this week- detailing the grammar and vocabulary on which they will be tested.

All the writing for the speech will be done in class. Students are NOT to use computer translators or online translators to work on any assignments, especially not the speeches.

IMPORTANT DATES

Vocabulary tests will be given on December 13 and 14.

Pre-tests for Spanish I and French I Chapters 2a and 3 will be given on December 16 and 17.

Speeches will be presented in class on December 20 and 21.

Chapter 2A tests for Spanish I and Chapter 3 tests for French I will be given the last two days before winter break, December 22 and 23.

November 18, 2010

Spanish I students are taking their Chapter 1 tests. There is a multiple choice and a writing component. The writing component is open notebook, but not open book. They can use anything in their folder or homework folder or study diary.

French I students are preparing for their first speech. These speeches must be presented next week on Monday or Tuesday. If a student is absent he/she can do the speech after Thanksgiving. There are no re-takes on this since it is a CRES test. Students have been preparing for this for most of the month and we have done numerous activities to prepare. This includes:

in class oral exercices
worksheets
sentence line-ups
listening activities
a rough draft
peer editing
a final draft
and illustrating the paragraph (which will become their speech)

students have also received a list of activities to do in class or at home that will help them memorize their speeches. They can contact me over the weekend via email with any questions.

I am so proud of all the hard work my students put in- especially when they show me that they aren't afraid to make mistakes. They work hard to overcome obstacles and frustration- it is very inspiring!

Finishing Up the Term

First Term is winding down and this is a reminder for all students. There are a few things that will be turned in and graded for first term. Check Pinnacle and make sure you aren't missing any assignments.

First Vocabulary Test and Re-Take (if needed)
Chapter 1a Spanish or Chapter 2 (French) pre-quiz on quia.com
Any other re-takes for previous quizzes
Study Diaries (50 points homework grade)
Writing quiz make-ups or re-takes
Glog Assessment (summative grade)

Today we had a town hall meeting with the WHS Principal and Counselor. They emphasized the rigor that students will experience in High School and reminded students to study nightly and to challenge themselves. Your foreign language class is a High School level course, for High School credit. The expectation is that students will use time at home to try to learn and make connections between the new information I present, and the things they already know. To this end, I have provided NUMEROUS types of activities for them: music, drawing, glogs, powerpoints, games, writing, singing, recording, etc.... students can easily find a mode of practice that appeals to them! If you are having trouble finding a way to make connections, or need some help in other ways PLEASE don't wait- contact me asap!

Homework and Quiz Updates

All classes are doing a glog.(Scroll down on my blog to see two examples of glogs I have created.) It will be counted as a test grade and will be graded and put on the first term grade. This glog and all assignments from first term will must be turned in by October 29th to be counted as part of first term.

All three Spanish classes have taken their vocabulary spelling tests. These will be handed back by Monday and retakes will be on Thursday during tutoring. French students will be taking their French spelling tests tomorrow (Friday) and Monday. They will get their tests back on Tuesday and Wednesday and will be able to retake them on Thursday or Friday during tutoring or during lunch.

Please check the assignment/quiz/test calendars on my blog (wmsforeignlanguage.blogspot.com) on a daily or weekly basis to make sure you are up to date on the current items due.

My A-day French class did a wonderful job in their visit to the Social Studies class- they acted as French soldiers and fielded questions from the Americans. The soldiers and translators were super!

All of my classes continue to make me happy to come to work every day and I hope they continue to work hard throughout the year. All of my classes are a high-school level curriculum. It's very important to email or call me if you have an concerns or questions on your child's behalf.

Fun with Foreign Language

Mr. Haines has taught me how to use Glogster and I am now in the process of making my first glogs. These are prototypes of what I will want the kids to be doing in a week or so. I've scheduled time in the computer lab for us to work on them. Students will be making their first glog about their likes and dislikes.

You can scroll down to see my glog in French below. I will upload the Spanish one as soon as I tweek it a little bit more.

I created a cartoon using www.xtranormal.com - it's amazing. If you can type, you can make a movie!! And you can do it in many different languages. What a great opportunity for a student to practice his or her vocabulary by making their own cartoon/movie. Please check out the site and, if you feel comfortable, your child is welcome to make a movie/cartoon as one of their study diary assignments. Keep in mind that there may be some movies on the site that would be objectionable to you and don't let your student go on the site if you are not comfortable with it. I didn't see anything offensive when I was on the site- but I didn't look. Basically, if students don't search for anything, they won't find anything and I think it is an amazing tool for them to play and have fun while learning French or Spanish.

I had to use www.movavi.com to convert the video so that glogster could post it in my glog- so there were multiple steps to this. Regardless, it was a lot of fun and I just couldn't wait to share with my students.

Study Diary - Blog Post

Use two of your vocabulary words to respond to the following question as an anonymous blog comment:

In French: Qu'est-ce que tu aimes faire?

In Spanish: Que te gusta hacer?

(Please excuse my lack of accents. I'm not sure how to make them in blogger.)

New this week...

Students have finished their Chapter 1 test in French and the Para Empezar Chapter test in Spanish. Any student who made less than an 80% is being scheduled for re-testing and a re-take during tutoring. Initial grades will be posted tomorrow and re-takes will be scheduled by the end of next week for all students.

In all classes we have started a new unit about our likes and dislikes. Students have self-selected a new vocabulary list from the chapter and will be tested on that in about two weeks. Please check the calendars on this blog for specific dates. We will be going to the computer lab this week for practice and to take a pre-quiz to assess where students are with recognition of their vocabulary.

French students are finishing up their writing text on Tuesday and Wednesday- they need to be prepared to write four sentences (3 statements and 1 question) without the use of any notes or a textbook. They need to give their name, age, and make a statement about our classroom, then ask a question (not Ca va?).

New Vocabulary

New Vocabulary Lists and Homework Assignments are going home today and tomorrow. (Thursday for 7th graders). Please take a moment to check your child's homework folder and agenda to see what they are bringing home and don't forget to sign their homework contract! Thanks! Gracias! Merci!

Pêche, pomme, poire, abricot - French Children's Songs - France - Mama Lisa's World: Children's Songs and Rhymes from Around the World

Pêche, pomme, poire, abricot - French Children's Songs - France - Mama Lisa's World: Children's Songs and Rhymes from Around the World

The Lyrics are a bit different from the version that I learned and teach in class- much like our song "Patty Cake" or others, there are regional differences. Also, the spelling of the lyrics on the website is phonetic, and I spelled them correctly for the students in class.

Pomme, Poire, Peche, Abricot
Il y en a une
Il y en a une
Pomme, Poire, Peche, Abricot,
Il y en a une de trop.

How to Remember Things.....

I want to remind all of my students that learning French or Spanish requires you to make a connection between what you already know (English or another language) and what you are trying to remember (the new language).

You can do this in many ways, but making effective connections is unique to each learner. Some people make connections through images, others need words, and some need actions, songs, or the act of writing. The other part that is individualized is the background knowledge each of us uses to "hang" our new facts on. It takes some time and thought, but each student has to experiment with what helps cement new facts into their memory.

Today in class, my students explored a couple of ways to make this happen. We are preparing for their chapter tests tomorrow and Wednesday. As part of that review, we used acrostic poems, drawing pictures, and making up songs- or listening to songs that come along with our textbook. Students can access these songs through their online textbooks.

One of the Spanish acrostic poems was for the season of winter. Here's the poem.

Homework Diaries

Students need a folder, composition book, and index cards in order to complete their assignments at home. These items should travel to and from school with them.

Homework and studying are vital parts of learning. Students have homework on the nights that they have Spanish or French, and should study briefly EVERY night during the school week. I have suggested to them that they read over their vocabulary or verb conjugations in the last three minutes before falling asleep- this is all that many students need in order to improve their retention of the subject matter.

All students have recently received information on our "homework diaries". Students receive a graphic organizer that is in the form of a BINGO sheet.

Students do one activity per night (on the days they have class) and turn the sheet in after two weeks.

They will have done five activities in a row on the sheet.

They can do diagonal, up and down, or across.

It is acceptable to substitute an activity if the student is unable to do it for some reason.

All written work should be done in their composition book or spiral notebook. Students should record their work habits daily in the composition book so that they can effectively reflect on their efforts and how those efforts do or do not lead to academic success.

September 10, 2010

My students continue to thrill me this year- what a great work ethic they seem to have! They are helping each other in class and are very focused on their academic performance, but are still willing to have fun. Students in my block 1 Spanish class today did fantastic on their oral presentations and finished them all! Students in my French I class today got about half way through the presentations, and my 4th block Spanish class will be doing theirs on Wednesday the 15th.

Students should be able to do the following orally, without reading:

greet someone
say "pleased to meet you"
ask someone's name and tell their name
ask someone's age and tell their age
ask how someone feels today and answer the same question
ask someone what they are like (personality or appearance) and answer the question
say good-bye

All of these skills are part of preparing for their Oral CRES. This is the same CRES that is given to HS students. Students have to get a 60% in the class and on the CRES to get credit. The first oral CRES will be given in October, and this oral evaluation is the first assessment leading up to that CRES.

Please don't hesitate to email me with questions. nissa.quill@fcps.org.

French 1, First Block B-day

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

White Class- Spanish I, Block 4 (a-day)

They did not finish with preparing their conversations in class, so their oral presentation/quiz is postponed until the 15th of September.

Labor Day

I am so thrilled with my classes this year. The students have all shown me such a high level of humor, enthusiasm, and willingness to work that I can't help but feel optimistic and energized. They have almost all been willing to help one another in class, really teaching and guiding each other to achieve their academic goals. Each class is a pleasure to work with and I hope I can make their experience with French or Spanish a valuable and memorable one.

So, on Labor Day, I thank my students for a job that I LOVE!!!

On another note, if your child needs to re-take the pre-quiz for the first set of vocabulary words and the verb "to be" (etre or ser), they should be prepared to do so in class tomorrow or Wednesday.

We have Thursday off this week- a very short week indeed.

Thursday, September 2, 2010

Homework- 9/2 and 9/3

Students should study for their re-take of the parts of speech/ "to be" verb quiz. Only students who made less than 80% must re-take it, but any student wishing to re-take the quiz and improve their score may do so. This re-take will be given on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Students should have a composition book or spiral notebook to bring to class on Tuesday or Wednesay as we will begin using them at that time.

Tuesday next week will be an A-day and Wednesday will be a B-day.

We went over how to do that in class today. Also, they will ask you to sign up as a follower to this blog and to sign their agenda. They need for you to certify that they studied their words for at least 10 minutes.

Thanks! Gracias! Merci!

Welcome! Bienvenidos! Bienvenues!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to my blog. I look forward to spending the 2010-2011 school-year with your children in either a French I or Spanish I class! My name is Nissa Quill- but you will now me as Madame Quill or Senora Quill (Please pardon the lack of accents- I have yet to figure out how to use them in the blog.) I just recently moved to Union Bridge from Ijamsville, and am happy to finally be living in the area where I teach. I have been at WMS for several years. Before that I was a WAHM (work from home mom), a small-business owner, and (before that) a teacher and YMCA counselor. I have been working with kids in one form or another since 1989. (Yeah, I started when I was six. ;)

I love teaching Middle School and I love teaching French and Spanish. I learned to speak both as a child and then neglected my Spanish for many years, eventually studying in France and earning a BA in French. I renewed my use of and interest in Spanish in 1993 and have used it in both academic and professional settings. I am working on my MS at Hood College right now and will be working on more Spanish (and French) as part of my degree.

It is important to me to maintain good communication with you all. To that end, I hope you will sign up as a "follower" on this blog- that way you will be notified of updates and that will keep you informed about upcoming assignments, assessments, and events that we will be experiencing in my classes.

Once you have signed up as a follower, please post a comment to the blog or email me at nissa.quill@fcps.org with some information about your child (name, age, interests, grade level) and anything you want me to know about your family.

Your child is enrolled in a high-school level class. The material can be challenging and it is important not to let the students get behind in their work. This means that I will expect them to study and do homework on a nightly basis. I will be teaching them how to study as well as how to identify the study techniques that work best for them.

Enjoy these last few days of summer!

Friday, June 4, 2010

Summer is coming.

Students have almost completed their CRES tests. The grades will be in by the end of the day Tuesday and then students will receive a form with their final grade and a recommendation for their placement next year. In addition, students will be invited to participate in a Virtual Summer Camp to refresh and maintain their abilities in the target language so that they are prepared for the next level of foreign language instruction.

I wish everyone a wonderful summer and thank you all for a wonderful year.

French ER Verb Video

Here's a link to some fun -er verb videos.

Thursday, March 25, 2010

March 25, 2010

Everyone- we need the fundraising cards or money back by tomorrow or Monday. We haven't received many checks or cards and we'd really like to see as many kids as possible go on the trips. (French classes will go on May 17 OR 27 to the Melting Pot.) Please email me with any questions.

Spanish I

Spanish I students have completed their Spanish food diaries as an introduction to meals, foods, and beverages. These grades will be entered in the next couple of school days. In my 7th grade class some students will be completing this for homework. It is a big grade so please bring these in on Monday completed!

French I

We are learning to tell time and discuss our schedules. Students have also been working on conjugating "er" verbs and will soon start on "re" and "ir" verbs.

Spanish II

They did a fantastic job with their vacation projects and wrote about their vacations and those of their friends IN THE PAST TENSE. They are catching on quickly to the preterit (past tense) and we will be discussing the environment and recycling, etc... in upcoming units.

French I and Spanish I (8th grade)

Bonjour! Buenas Tardes!

French I

While we are missing Juliette (our student who left for Richmond) we did have a great day, today.

Everyone finished their new vocabulary lists on time (YEAH) and the students receiving fundraising cards for a French fieldtrip at the end of May. We will be visiting the fondue restaurant The Melting Pot as part of our food unit. Students have received 5 coupon cards to sell at a cost of $10 each. They MUST either sell them, or return them to me. (Checks made to WMS) If they sell all of their cards, I don't anticipate them having to shell out any more money for the fieldtrip. If we raise more than we need, we will use the funds for our end of the year fete! If you have any questions, please email me.

Also, they have a quiz on 'er" verbs on Monday. I'm sent some review sheets via email. Please email me if you need another copy. We did them in class some time ago, but students may need additional review. We will review some in class on Monday before the quiz, but I don't think that will be enough to get them ready for the test by itself.

I also handed out a new Bingo sheet today, for homework. It is due on April 1, the same day as the new vocabulary test.

Spanish I

Students took a vocabulary quiz today and got their new list of vocabulary words, as well as a new Bingo sheet (due on April 1 the same day as the vocabulary quiz). We are starting the food unit and will be having a Spanish culture day in a couple of weeks. Students should start thinking about what Spanish/Hispanic/Latino cuisine they would like to bring in for extra credit. I will send home a letter next week with the date and guidelines.

Students also were given their coupon cards earlier this week- a fundraiser for our Spanish fieldtrip at the end of April. Please send the cards or the money back by March 26. Thank you.

Spanish I today practiced using -ar verbs to talk about what people do and don't do. We played 20 questions using the forms for yo and tu (I and you) and then worked on a conversation from the book. Students also worked on their flashcards for their new vocabulary.

French I today practiced asking and answering the question (What is she/he like?). We made up conversations about famous people and asked/answered the questions. Not all students finished presenting, so we will finish that on Wed. In addition I forgot to take up the homework today- so everyone better have it on Wed.! They have a vocabulary test on Friday, a verb quiz on 2/8/10, and a mid-term exam on 2/4/10. They received their list of verbs today for the 2/8 quiz. They will get the mid-term review sheet on Friday when they are done with their vocabulary test.
